I’m playing Masha in Chekhov’s play “The Seagull” and therefore need to learn about childbirth in Russia from about 1890 to 1905. I’ve done some research so far but haven’t found anything substantial yet. I’d appreciate it if you could tell me a bit about the birthing process itself e.g. how painful it was for the women, if they tended to have home births or hospital births and any other information you may have.
